Honda Big Wing by VaSLab Architecture
In 2009 VaSLab Architecture designed the Honda Big Wing located on Praditmanutham Road in Ladprao, Bangkok, Thailand. It reminds of the winning moments of racing motorcycles. Made by concrete the sculpture’s forms are in “hugging the curve” transition. The café from the ground level, the showroom, retails, education zone from the first level and the warehouse are united by a boomerang façade. There are two of these that combines the plans, the other one takes from the mezzanine lounge/conference to the offices, canteen and back to the ground level with the service center and workshop.
The main material used for construction is concrete, this brings a masculine touch to the building, it makes it stabile and imposing. Due to the continuous surfaces the dynamic characteristic flows from exterior to interior. This sustainable material is also recommended because Bangkok has a hot and humid climate and a paint-on-concrete texture should be repainted often. The construction was made so the costs to be smaller: the showroom was placed on the first level in order to avoid the humidity from the ground level, there had been installed solar cells that ensures the electricity for the building’s exterior lighting system. Due to its poetic form Honda Big Wing really has an identity.
