Elliott Ripper House from Sydney Australia was designed by Christopher Polly. He didn’t started from zero, the formal qualities in plan and section were already made, he had to extent the existing materials of the previous plan. The most important points were to increase interior volumes, to enjoy sunlight, ventilation and to have access at the tree canopies views.
On the ground floor was extended the existing envelope, ceiling and floor levels and was inserted an open plan with the kitchen, dining and living room. Because the cathedral volume permitted it, was added a new floor that was connected by a large sculpted, open stair with the other one. Areas got spacious with sliding doors and pivoting windows. Because the project was actually about extending the old residence, there are many contrasts in the area, fine steel plate elements with the weatherboard cladding profile, western red cedar.
Children and adults areas are slightly separated, the open plan volume is meant for day activities and on the next level are the private rooms, those for evening activities like watching TV, reading. Finally on the third floor are the bedrooms and the study area. In the end the new part blend well with the existing house, so now the owners can enjoy their new, spacious and modern home.
