Muskoka Boathouse and Seasonal Residence
It’s been a long time since we’ve shared a boat house design, and now we found one that it’s absolutely inspiring. A gorgeous modern wood construction designed by Christopher Simmonds Architects and located at the end of a narrow bay in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, Canada.
Muskoka residence represents a renovation of an old boathouse with a 600 square foot second story guest suite and roof terrace addition. The great thing about this house, is that provide varied views, not only to the distant lake but also some beautiful views of the forested shoreline of the bay. The connection between the two levels of the house, the lower deck and the second roof terrace, is made via an exterior staircase.
The basic material in the construction of this house is the wood, that is used as much in the interior as in the exterior design. The idea for the interior design was to create a combination between rustic materials and minimalist detailing, in order to create a contemporary sheltering. The exterior is clad with clear stained western red cedar, used horizontally on the ground floor and vertically above in order to define the two programmatic uses for the residence. The house is framed on three sides with wood studs and the fourth side opens up to a great roof terrace defined by a beam structure and extensive glazing.
