Great Architecture Reflected in Yoyogi National Gymnasium by Kenzo Tange

The Yoyogi National Gymnasium has been designed by one of Japan’s most famous modernist architects, Kenzo Tange, and represents an architectural icon for its distinctive design.

The structural design is very innovative, creating dramatic sweeping curves that appear drape from two large, central supporting cables. The result is a symmetrical suspension structure that elegantly draps from the central structural spine and reflects a western modernist aesthetics with traditional Japanese architecture, where the architect is trying to integrate the building into the landscape. It‘s flowing surfaces make the minimal surface structure appear as a fabric suspended by two simple supports that’s being pulled into tension by the landscape.
