Genius Loci House by Bates Masi Architects
Montauk is the last name that comes to your mind when you’re thinking for a nice location for a vacation house. It has an unpredictable weather that includes heavy fog and gusty winds, a history that talks about the Montauk Project Conspiracy, German Submarines, the Montauk Monster. Even if in the landscape can be seen the radar tower and bunkers some clients challenged the Bates Masi Architects to design the house that captures this spirit.
Located on one of the highest elevations from Montauk the house seems from afar two modest ranch house, if you get interested you’ll see that the project is actually more complex that you would think. Even if it is embedded into the steep slope the house receives enough light and it has nice views to the lake from the west side. The two volumes are unified by the wood screen that covers the bridge and reads differently from day to night. To create larger areas and to let light in, especially in the guest areas the architects decided to use a pattern without alternating stones. The house has many entrances and that is how the circulation yields is unique and Genius Loci House can be presented as a modern welcoming house.
