Gallery House by Ogrydziak/Prillinger Architects
Gallery House is combining living with art at high standards. Located in San Francisco, California it is the house of a virologist and a mathematician, two prominent collectors. They asked for Ogrydziak/Prillinger Architects to design their dream house, it was a special job because they had to combine the comfort of a house with the look and the needs of a semi-public gallery. The owners are the best example of what it means to live with and look after art. Their desire was to share the collection not only with friends but also with anybody interested in art. The exhibition circuit includes even the private spaces, on two floors and the penthouse sculpture garden.
Because San Francisco has varied climate the envelope of the house was carefully chosen in order to protect from cold meanwhile it is still connected with the sun and the breeze. On the South side is the park and on the North the city, it is obvious that on the South side the rooms are large with big windows. Because it is also a gallery, natural light is very important that is why on the roof there’s a garden with drought-resistant plants, pierced with skylights that brings daylight in all the rooms.
